Ne Yapmak İstiyoruz?
Kayık 1934 kısaca rüzgârla gelen dönüşüm projesi. Bu projeyle geçmiştenbir parçayı günümüze taşıyoruz, onnu doğayla birleştiriyoruz ve farklı bir gelecek önerisi yapıyoruz. Bir geleneksel denizcilik ve doğayı kucaklama projesi. Ufak bir ekibiz. Projenin yaratıcısı olarak kendimi, nasıl ufacık yaşta denizle tanışmamdan daha sonra daha doğal bir yaşam savunucusu antropoloğa dönüşümümü yandaki profilimde kısaca anlattım. Projemize gelirsek, kısaca üç ana hedeften oluşuyor. Çok daha ayrıntılı bilgi için aşağıda bağlantısı verilen sitemize gidebilirsiniz:
İlk hedefimiz 1930’ların sonuna kadar var olmuş, aşağıda gözüken tipte bir yelkenli iş kayığının 11.5 metrelik replikasını yapmak. Özgün haliyle, motorsuz, sadece yelkenli olarak. Hem Bodrum hem de Ege geleneksel denizciliğine, türünün son örneği bir anıt-kayık kazandıracağız.İkinci hedefimiz, bu yelkenli kayıkla, Ege’nin yelken dönemi denizciliğini ve özellikle de yelken armalarını araştırmak, bu alanda çalışmalar yaparak kitap ve belgeseller yayınlamak, atölye ve seminerler düzenlemek ve böylece geleneksel denizciliği canlandırmak. Kayığımız farklı yelken armaları deneyebilecek şekilde tasarlandı. Yelken denizciliğini çalışan bir araştırma kayığı olarak faaliyette bulunacak.
Üçüncü hedefimizse doğrudan deniz, doğa ve insan ilişkisi. Geleneksel yelken denizciliği insanı doğayla buluşturan bir denizcilik türü. Çeşitli atölye ve seyirlerle modern yaşama alternatif sakin, yavaş ve etik bir yaşam tarzını tanıtmak istiyoruz. Doğaya ve gezegenimize duyarlılığı arttırmak, daha az ve bilinçli tüketerek diğer canlı ve cansızlarla dayanışma içinde onları da gözeterek yaşayabileceğimizi anlatmak, bu düşünce ve yaşam tarzını yaymak için çalışmalar düzenleyeceğiz. Kayığımız giderek yıpranan doğa ve gezegenimizin sesi olmaya çalışacak. Amaç, sadece bir geleneksel denizcilik anıtı yapmak değil, bu yelkenliyle bu hedefler doğrultusunda sürekli faaliyetlerde de bulunmak.
Neden Yapıyoruz?
Yerelliği korumak: Küreselleşmenin kontrolden çıktığını düşünüyoruz. Kültürler giderek özgünlüklerini yitiriyor. Oysa farklılıklar insanları değişik seçeneklerle tanıştırarak daha zengin ve sürdürülebilir bir dünya sunma potansiyeli taşıyor. Geçmişten öğrenebileceğimiz ve tekrar kullanıma sokabileceğimiz çeşitli pratikler ve değerler olduğuna ve dolayısıyla kültürel özgünlüklerin korunması gerektiğine inanıyoruz. Denizcilik, özellikle geleneksel denizcilik de yöremiz ve denizimiz için korunması gereken son derece önemli bir kültürel varlığımız.Farklı bir yaşam alternatifine öncülük etmek. Hem Türkiye'de hem de dünyada, kontrolsüz aşırı tüketimle birlikte gelen bir "hep ben hep ben" anlayışı öne geçti ve giderek güçleniyor. Bu da genelde gezegenimiz özelde ise yöremizin yaşam alanları üzerinde olumsuz etkilere sebep oluyor. Amacımız, denizciliğin en doğal hali olan geleneksel yelkencilik üzerinden bu gidişe karşı yerel bir direniş noktası oluşturarak hem doğaya duyarlılığı arttırmak ve geliştirmek hem de başka varlıklarla paylaştığımız bu gezegenle uzlaşma, uyum ve dayanışmaya dayanan bir yaşam tarzını teşvik etmek. Kayığımız, geleneksel denizcilik kadar doğal denizcilik de diyerek sakin, yavaş ve etik bir yaşam alternatifine öncülük edecek. Büyük bir proje, bu yüzden finansal desteğe ihtiyacımız var. Ama daha da önemlisi, sizin de payınız olsun istiyoruz. Şu anda projemizin en önemli bileşeni olan yelkenlimizi yapıyoruz. 11.5 metrelik geleneksel yelkenli bir tırhandil. Kayığın yapımı iki aşamadan oluşuyor. İlk önce gövdesini tamamlayacağız, sonra da yelken armasını yapacağız. Bu kampanya gövdesi için. Kampanyadan önce kendi birikimimizle epey yol aldık, gövdenin biçimi belirdi. İskeleti ve postaları tamamlandı. Geriye gövdenin yapılması ve gövdenin sarılması kaldı. Ama bu aşamanın tamamlanması için en az 30.000 liralık bir ek desteğe daha ihtiyacımız var. Biz Kimiz? Ekip
Timuçin Binder: Projenin yaratıcısı. Çocuk yaşta denizle tanışıp 1970’lerin ilk yarısından itibaren yıllarca deniz turizminde çalışmıştır. Denizci bir ailenin beşinci kuşak üyesidir. Denizcilik yıllarında yaşadığı yörenin (Ege adaları da d üzere Güney Ege ve Anadolu’nun güney kıyıları) doğa ve kültürüyle arasında derin bağlar oluşmuştur. Yüksek öğrenimine ABD’nin Purdue Üniversitesinde makine mühendisliğiyle başlamışsa da, son yılında vazgeçip UC Berkeley Üniversitesi’nde baştan başlayarak antropoloji ve arkeoloji okumuş, antropolog olarak mezun olmuştur.Denizcilik araştırmaları ve insan ve doğa ilişkileri başlıca ilgi alanlarıdır. Doğa ve dağ yürüyüşçüsü de olan Timuçin Binder, doğayla, yani üstünde yaşadığımız gezegenle eşitlikçi ve etik bir ilişki kurulması ve insanın, konumunu bu ilkeler çerçevesinde yeninden tanımlaması gerektiğine inanıyor. Mehmet Uyav: Kayık1934 projesinin tırhandil formundaki kayığının ustası. Dedesi, Bodrum’da ve Türkiye’de ilk tırhandili yaparak hem Bodrum hem de Güllük’te tekne yapımcılığını başlatmış olan Girit kökenli Nami’nin Mehmet ustadır. Denizci bir aileden gelmektedir. Altı yaşında dedesi ile babasının yanında tekne yapımcılığına başlamıştır. Aile mesleğini devralan Mehmet Usta, yedi metreden başlayıp aralarında Kybele, Alize gibi 30-32m civarında ünlülerin de olduğu birçok tekne inşa etmiştir. Sektördeki diğer ustalardan farklı olarak teknelerinin armalarını da kendisi tasarlamış. Uzun yıllar fenercilik de yapmış olan Mehmet Usta’nın en büyük aşkı her zaman tırhandil olmuştur.
Zehra Denizaslanı: Mehmet Usta gibi denizci bir Girit göçmeni ailenin üyesi olan Zehra Denizaslanı için iki çok önemli konu vardır: Girit kökeni ve deniz. Bodrum’da Girit göçmenlerinin yerleştirildiği Kumbahçe mahallesinde büyümüştür, Girit kültürünün tamamen kaybolmaması için Girit ve Yunanistan Göçmenleri Kültür ve Dayanışma Derneğini kurmuş ve derneğin başkanlığını yürütmektedir. Bodrum’un yetiştirdiği en önemli tekne ustalarından olan eşi Ali Kemal Denizaslanı’nın, vefatından önce içinde yer aldığı ve tüm modellerini yaptığı Bodrum Deniz Müzesi’nin kuruluş aşamasında da çalışmıştır. Kayık1934 çalışmasının başlamasında kilit bir rol oynamış olan Zehra Denizaslanı bugün bu çalışmanın hayata geçmesinde başta tanıtım olmak üzere elinden geleni yapmaktadır.
Selen Cambazoğlu: Sualtı arkeoloğu bir babanın kızı olarak çocukluğu Bodrum Kalesi’nde (Sualtı Arkeoloji Müzesi), sualtı kazılarında (Uluburun) ve ailesi dalış turizmine başladıktan sonra da denizde ve sualtında geçmiş. Bilkent Üniversitesi Arkeoloji ve Sanat Tarihi Bölümünden mezun olmuştur. Bugün Bodrum Denizcilik Müzesi’nin müdürü olarak Bodrum’un denizcilik geçmişinin tanıtılmasında çeşitli çalışmalar düzenlemektedir. Kayık 1934 projesinin bu alanda taşıdığı potansiyelin farkında olarak Bodrum Denizcilik Müzesi adına baştan beri projenin içinde her türlü konuda yardımcı olmaktadır. Kayığımız inip faaliyetlerine başladıktan sonra müzeyle birlikte çeşitli ortak çalışmalar yürütecektir.
Mehmet Uyargil ve Cana Üngün: Projemizin gönüllü fotoğrafçıları. Bodrum’un Suskun Çanları adlı belgesel de dahil çeşitli görsel çalışmalar gerçekleştirmiş fotoğraf sanatçıları olarak bu sefer de projemize destek oluyorlar. Projemizin görsel değerini arttırmanın yanında bir de tüm sürecin anlatılacağı bir belgesel hazırlıyorlar.

Journey to the past and nature. With a sailboat. No engine. Nor any modern technology. Just the wind…
What do we want to accomplish?
Caique 1934 is, metaphorically speaking, a transformation project that comes with the wind. With this project, we bring a part of the past to the present, combine it with nature, and turn it into a proposal for future. A traditional maritime project that embraces nature. We are a small team. As the creator of the project, I briefly described myself in my profile, located to the right of the page, how I transformed from meeting the sea at a very young age to an anthropologist of a natural life advocate. You will find the short biographies of other members of our team below.
As for our project, it consists of three main goals. For more detailed information, you can go to our site shown in the Links section:
Our first goal is to make an 11.5-meter replica of a sailing boat that existed until the end of the 1930s. In its original form, without an engine, just as a sailboat. We will thus bring forth a monument-caique, the last of its kind, for Bodrum, our town in Turkey, and the Aegean traditional sailing.Our second goal is to conduct research on the sailing period of the Aegean, especially its sailing rigs, using this caique, to publish books and documentaries, to organize workshops and seminars, and thus to revive the culture of the Aegean traditional sailing. Our caique is designed to be able to try different rigs. It will operate as a research caique studying the Age of Sail of the Aegean Sea.
Our third goal is the relationship between sea, nature and human beings. Traditional sailing is a type of sailing that brings people together with nature. We want to introduce, through various workshops and cruises, a calm, slow and ethical lifestyle, alternative to modern life. We will organize activities to increase sensitivity to nature and our planet, to explain that we can live in solidarity with other living and non-living things by consuming less and consciously, and to spread this way of thinking and living. Our caique will try to be the voice of our increasingly deteriorating nature and planet; she will undertake such a mission.
Our aim is not only to build a traditional maritime monument, but also to carry out activities in line with these goals using this caique from the past.
Why are we doing it?
To conserve the local culture. We believe globalization has gotten out of control; cultures are increasingly losing their unique characteristics in the name of globalization. Yet, cultural differences have the potential to present a richer and more sustainable world by making different options and potential solutions available. We believe that there are practices and values that we can learn from the past and recycle them into our present lives, and therefore cultural authenticities must be preserved. Our local maritime culture, especially traditional sailing, is a important component of our local identity and sea that needs to be conserved and revived if needed.To spearhead a different life alternative. Both in Turkey and the world, the mentality of "me, me”, together with uncontrolled excessive consumption has gotten ahead and is growing stronger. This affects adversely the habitats of our planet in general and our region in particular. Our aim is to increase and develop sensitivity to nature and promote a lifestyle based on reconciliation, harmony, and solidarity with this planet that we share with other beings by creating a local resistance site against this trend through traditional sailing, the most natural form of sailing.
Through natural sailing as much as traditional sailing, the caique will spearhead a calm, slow and ethical life alternative. To make this message stronger, we chose to sail with an engineless caique.
Why do we need your support?
The project does not only aim to build a monument-caique. We will also carry out social awareness and nature conservation projects with our caique in order to increase sensitivity to nature and sea. It's a big project, so we need additional financial support. But more importantly, we want you to feel as if you are part of our project so that your support will hopefully turn into a collective cultural ownership. Since any support will mean "I have assisted this project, a part of me is in this project", we are hoping that this will eventually lead to a community of supporters who share our goals. This is exactly what we want! Because projects that do not get their strength from a community cannot be permanent and permanence makes culture. We would like to see this monument-caique and the project to lead to a cultural unity over time. We thought of what we call it a support-exchange system to establish this bond. Your supports will come back to you as a variety of rewards, including various sea cruises combined with nature activities. Thus, you will be able to directly benefit from our project.How will your support be used?
We are currently building the most important component of our project, our sailing workboat. A traditionally rigged 11.5 meter trehandiri caique. The construction of the caique consists of two stages. First we will construct the hull, then we will rig her and have our sails made. This funding campaign is for her hull. We have come a long way with our own resources up until now; the shape of the hull has appeared, see the above image. However, we still need about 30.000 more Turkish liras (roughly 4200 USD or 3300 Euros). Your support will be used to purchase the remaining timber and the necessary construction materials. If your support, namely donations, goes beyond the expected target, we will transfer the remaining amount to the second stage, the rigging of the caique and the purchase of the rig material and sails.

750 TL – Dinner on a Caique for Two
We will host you in our caique with a friend or spouse. You will get to know our boat closely and learn about our work, and you will enjoy a seafood dinner with a bottle of wine.
1000 TL – Daily Caique Sailing (max. 4 persons)
You will experience and enjoy a daily traditional sailing cruise in a non-motorized boat with your group of no more than four people. During the cruise you can join us, if you wish, hoisting the sails, holding the helm and etc. Thus, you will have the opportunity to experience the nature-human relationship closely on a traditional sailboat. Duration: 6 hours.
1750 TL – Under the Stars (3 days – 2 nights)
We offer a two-night night sky experience for star enthusiasts, natural night observation without tools. Stars are the special interest of the project creator / captain. He will introduce you to the constellations, zodiac signs and stars, and explain the mythologies and astrologies created by man about the night sky in detail. Therefore, we will be more active at nights on this cruise; two nights two different locations. If you happen to come across one of the meteor showers, your experience will be even more wonderful.
2000 TL – Traditional Sailing Cruise (3 days – 2 nights)
Beginner workshop for traditional sailing enthusiasts or those who want to get to know this type of sailing. For this experience, our wind speed upper limit will be force 4. We will concentrate on the traditional sailing commands and terms, the principles of rigging, the blocks and block-and-tackles, rigging and maintaining running rigging and sails, and the history of rigging. We will practice what we have learned by sailing every day. Sea and traditional sailing.
2500 TL – Nature and Sea Cruise (4 days – 3 nights)
We combine sailing with nature/mountain hiking. For our cruise, we will choose one of the gulfs of Gökova, Hisarönü or Bozburun, explore the coast by sailing and the mountains on foot. Eight to twelve km hikes in the morning. Sea and nature hiking.
5000 TL - Ultra Cruise (7 days – 6 nights)
In our ultra-cruise we offer you two options. In both options, our cruise area will be one of the gulfs of Gökova, Hisarönü, or Bozburun.
1. Sailing cruise with 15-25 km nature/mountain hikes for those who want to enjoy the mountains and sea to the fullest, to raise the bar and perhaps are looking for a challenge. In some cases, while we hike some of the trails our caique will meet us in the next bay and we will sail from there. And in some cases, if the conditions are right, we will hike at night. Nature, sea and bodily experience.
2. Sailing cruise that combines nature and sailing with the culture and history of the region with emphasis on more intense intellectual experience, what we call the Blue Exploration. In line with the spirit of our project, we will concentrate on topics from the subjects of nature, humankind, ecology, history, archeology and philosophy. Nature, sea and culture.
Who are we? The Team
Timuçin Binder: The creator of the project. Having met the sea as a small kid, he worked on boats in blue voyage tourism for years since the first half of the 1970s. He is a fifth-generation member of a seafaring family. During his years in the sea, he formed deep ties with the nature and culture of his region (including the Aegean islands, the South Aegean, and the southern coasts of Anatolia). He began his higher education studying mechanical engineering at Purdue University in the USA, but he gave up in his last year and studied, from scratch, anthropology and archeology instead at UC Berkeley, graduating an anthropologist.Maritime research and human - nature relations are his main areas of interest. An avid nature and mountain hiker, Timuçin Binder believes that an egalitarian and ethical relationship should be established with nature, that is, the planet we live on, and that human beings should redefine their position within the framework of these principles. The project is the product of this idea. On the other hand, he has been working on the subjects of traditional sailing and sailing rigs, the most important part of his life since childhood. He assisted in the founding of the Bodrum Maritime Museum by preparing the texts of the museum and today, as a museum volunteer, he provides consultancy support to the museum in maritime history and research. He will handle the making of the rig of our caique and captain our cruises.
Mehmet Uyav: The boatwright of the trehandiri caique of our Caique 1934 project. He is the grandson of Mehmet of Nami, a Cretan migrant, who built the first trehandiri in Bodrum and Turkey, and started boatbuilding both in Bodrum and Güllük. He comes from a family of sailors. He started boat building at the age of six with his grandfather and his father. Taking over the family business, he has built many boats starting from seven meters to 30-32 meter ones such as the famous Kybele and Alize. Unlike other boatwrights in the sector, he has also designed the rigs of his boats. Worked as a lighthouse keeper too for many years, his greatest love has always been building trehandiris.
Zehra Denizaslanı: A member of a Cretan immigrant family of sailors and fishermen like our boatwright, she consaiders twao things very dear to her: her Cretan origin and the sea. She grew up in the Kumbahçe neighborhood of Bodrum, where the Cretan immigrants were settled, and in order not to lose her Cretan identity she spearheaded founding of an association for the descendants of the Cretan immigrants to conserve their culture. She is the current president of this association. She also took part in the founding of the Bodrum Maritime Museum, where her late husband Ali Kemal Denizaslanı, one of the most outstanding boatwrights of Bodrum, singlehandedly built all the models in the museum. She played a key role in the start of our project and now she is doing her best for its successful completion by promoting her.
Selen Cambazoğlu: As the daughter of an underwater archaeologist father, she spent her childhood in Bodrum Castle (Underwater Archeology Museum), underwater excavations (Uluburun), and after her family started diving tourism, in the sea and underwater . She graduated from Bilkent University Archeology and Art History Department. Today, as the director of the Bodrum Maritime Museum, she organizes various studies in promoting Bodrum's maritime past. Realizing the potential of the Kayak 1934 project in this field, she has been assisting our project on behalf of the Bodrum Maritime Museum in all kinds of matters. Once our caique is launched and starts her activities, there will be many joint activities with the museum.
Mehmet Uyargil and Cana Üngün: Volunteer photographers of our project. As photographers, they have carried out various visual works, including the documentary of the Silent Bells of Bodrum. Now, they have become part of our team. Not only they enhance the visual value of our project, they are working on a documentary of our project.
Institutional Support
Various local institutions, especially Bodrum Municipality, showed great interest in our project (for example, while Bodrum Municipality promised a permanent anchorage, Milas Municipality allocated the place where our caique is being built currently), our most important supporter is the Bodrum Maritime Museum, an organization of Bodrum Municipality.
